Ask your parents to set up a 529 plan for you. The money that you earn in the savings plan will be tax free. Ask relatives for deposits as gifts. Find a job and save 50% of your income for college.
More important than saving money though, is do not let your grades suffer. Good grades and participation in high school activities are important for scholarships.
In your junior year of high school, take the PSAT. This test is the first step toward National Merit Award Scholarships.

When I was in the 5th grade, I started working in the school cafeteria loading lunch trays into the dishwasher. I got paid 5 dollars a week and had lunches paid for. (This was for working about 45 minutes a day). Many schools have these positions for a select few students, but never advertise them anywhere. Ask your principle and parents to help you do this. The money you earn and the money your parents saved on your lunch money should go directly to you... to put in your savings account.
Good luck.Question: Best way to save for college within 7yrs?

Have you considered joining Upromise? You can join for free and earn between 1% and 25% in college savings for things you already do, like travel, dining, shopping online, even buying a house. There are more than 40,000 participating retail stores and services committed to helping members save for college. Their website also has a lot of good info on saving for college.

I really want to applaud the fact that you are thinking about this stuff already. There are a lot of parents out there that don't think about this until their kids reach high school or even when they start applying for colleges.
Like the others said, you should start saving money and not withdrawing from the account. Scholarships and grants help, but don't count too much on those, Honestly who knows what kind of government assistance and private loans will be available in 7 years.
Maybe look into some bonds or CD'sQuestion: I have 2 kids and want to save for college for them. What's the best college saving plans provided?
I have 2 kids and want to save for college for them. What's the best college saving plans provided? Does anyone have any suggestions or info on college saving plans besides the 529 plan? I'm searching for something that either matches or provides a high interest rate.Answer: The best choice is actually the 529 savings plan because it ...
The best choice is actually the 529 savings plan because it is tax free on the income tax until 2010 federal wise, grows tax free, and is tax free to withdraw. The best plan I have heard is the Colorado 529 savings plan, but it could have changed since the latest ratings came out. On the other hand, some states do offer prepaid college credit plans, but they are getting more rare. I must admit that I am not with any of the companies or websites below. I have included some resources below about the 529 savings plans.Answer: The Gerber Plan. Premiums never go up.

You can claim yourself only if you can prove that you provide more than 50% of your own support. If you make over $3000/year, 50% of every dollar over goes against you in the financial aid formula. Hope this helped.Question: How should I handle saving money for college??
I really intend (once I finish Highschool) to go to a college/ university in the states.. however.. parents arnt too happy with the thought of there daughter (me) traveling in a unkown state... (were from canada and live in canada) so with that in mind they are probably are not gonna fork over any money for me to go.. and I understand their reasons.. but im still going to go.. so I need a plan like a way to start saving money so I will have enough to go to college.. im first going to go to a community college cause its cheaper there.. and that alone will cost around 17,000-20,000 and thats including Living expences, health insurance, textbooks and supplies and out of state tuition and fees... per school year. Im curious to know the calculation for all of that.. like how much money would I be saving if working part time (minimum wage).. and full time during the summer in a spand of 1-2yrs?... Would that cover for college expensivs?? im also planning on transferring to a uni
Im also planning on transffering to a university .. and that alone will cost another 20,000 probably or more per year...
by then though I hope to have a part time job in california.. while attending community college..Answer: I don't know how it works in Canada, but the best way to ...
I don't know how it works in Canada, but the best way to save money in the states is from a 529 College Savings Account. If you Google College 529, you can get more information for your specific needs. The best part about a 529 is that it gains interest and when you distribute the money for college expenses, you pay no tax on the interest you gained.Answer: Do check out 529 accounts and upromise.com. Another thing to ...
Do check out 529 accounts and upromise.com. Another thing to keep in mind is to try to get residency in the state where you're in school. It'll be harder for you, as a non-citizen, but it will really help make your tuition lower. You usually have to live there for a year, not be supported by your parents (when they don't live there), and have basic things like a driver's license in that state. When you're checking out college websites, that's something else to look for.Question: Parent's haven't saved ANY money for college?
I was reading an article about saving money for college, and I asked parents how much they had saved in college fund. They said they hadn't saved any money. I was speechless-I'm a tenth grader, and this came as a huge shock. They said it was either pay the bills or save the money. I had always assumed that they had, and now I don't know what to do.
Any suggestions? I'm really stuck (and completely shocked).
thing is, I wont get much financial aid, because we're an upper middle class range-my dad's an anestheseologist. and it would be very hard for me to get a job, because im in about nine extra cirricular activities, all done so I can get into a good college...but the concept of paying just slipped our minds.Answer: Don't be mad at your parent . We were middle income and ...
Don't be mad at your parent . We were middle income and it was hard to save money with 3 kids. My first son got grants and loans to be paid when he graduates. It even helps pay his living expenses. Also check with scholarships anywhere and everywhere you can. One local Lions club pays someone to go to nursing school every so often. Ask your school. they will help you plan. Also, get a part tiem job and you are serios, save some money back for it. Ps. Our school even gives out small scholarships like $500 and $1000. You can add them together to help get your education.
Later- We are middle upper class to and son still did it. I still say to check with your school. If your parents come up with help, more the better. I know it is hard on those pay groups to get anything free but it is still out there.Answer: Well your only in 10th grade...so the problem that your ...
Well your only in 10th grade...so the problem that your parents haven't saved any money for your college fund..its not that big of a deal. I bet they will have money saved by the time you go to college. But..if they don't... there are way too many options that can help you pay for college tuition such as financial aid, scholarships, grants, loans, work loans(I think thats what they call it), and etc..
So you don't need to worry about this issue now. Just tell your parents to save some money if they can.
hope this helps! =]Answer: Ultimately it is your education and you are the one that ...
Ultimately it is your education and you are the one that will benefit from it so don't be mad at them. Better they have a roof over your head and food in your stomach than a college savings fund.
Start saving for yourself, working part time, 2 years is a long time for someone to save when you have no bills and don't have to pay rent. I did this and had thousands of dollars in the bank when I went off to college and you can do the same thing. Just keep focused and when your tempted to use that cash on expensive shoes or clothes, eating out or buying a car, have the for-thought to look 2 years in the future.
College is all about sacrificing what we are, for what we can become.
Good luck.
PS Drop some extracurricular activities, using them as a way to get into college won't do you any good if you can pay for it once you get there.Question: saving for college?

Try babysitting, if that doesn't work, apply for a bagger at your local grocery store. Also you can tutor younger kids for money. And pet-sitting is good too. Next year you can work at food places(16 years old to work at most restaraunts in the UnitedStates)

Not many people hire at that age... but babysitting is a good suggestion.
Once you turn 16 you can get a job that offers tuition reimbursement, where they help you pay for your college.
Like me, I'm 17 and I've worked at Quiktrip for a year (you might not have them where you live) and I start college in the fall and they are giving me 2000 dollars to help with school as long as I maintain a 2.0gpa and work at least 25 hours a week.
2000 isnt much but its something and I'm also getting financial aid.
Another place you can work that I know that offers that is Starbucks....Answer: I believe that most jobs require you to be 18 years old. ...
I believe that most jobs require you to be 18 years old. There may be some grocery stores that might hire younger workers. You could of course be a newspaper delivery person. Or an entreprenear. I didn't spell that correctly, but what that means, is find something that you can make and sell it. Start your own business. There are many people who do this and have made much more money than by working for minimum wage. |
