Question: Financial Aid problems?
My Financial Aid office keeps sending me forms to fill out for proof of parents income and everything which is perfectly fine. But, they sent a note that said if person I am filing under is a grandparent, I need to provide proof of guardianship. Well, I am 21 years old, I don't have a guardian. I take care of myself, pay own rent, pay bills, I have no cosigner on anything I have like apt. and loans. My mom kicked me out at 18, I don't know dad, and grandpa is the one I file under but he doesn't necessarily provide for me. I do everything myself. So what should I do on this stupid proof of guardianship if there is no such thing? I have lived on own for 3 years now and get no support from anyone. What do I need to tell them? Also, no one claims me. But I'm not married, in the army, have a child, or parents aren't dead. Thanks Elizabeth. And Found-1, what if I have no way of getting in touch with "parents"? My dad is probably in jail somewhere, and I can't get in touch with mom. So, what can I do? Does the gov just expect me to go out and get pregnant? This isn't like it's first year in college. I am going in to 4th year.

Answer: Can you prove anything with your high school records? Was ...
Can you prove anything with your high school records? Was the place where your high school diploma sent to them? I would speak to the financial aid office. Each school has an application for appeal in order to change your status from dependent to independent. It requires a good bit of paperwork , but it would make you eligible for more grants, loans, etc. It sounds like you should qualify. Some schools give you a very hard time about this. Be prepared for the burned out staff member who heard students and parents lying a multitude of times. Get out copies of your federal forms, apartment leases, car paperwork etc, anything you can think of that may help prove your case. If your mom would write a statement saying that you have been on your own financially since 18 and your dad was not part of your life, it might help, too. I know when a good friend of mine provided that to the financial aid office, it was a done deal.

Answer: If you read the Fafsa instructions carefully, you will ...
If you read the FAFSA instructions carefully, you will discover that you can't file your fafsa under your grandfather unless he legally adopted you before you were 18 years old. Unless this happened, you will need to correct your fafsa information to include your mothers information (and her husband if she has one). It doesn't matter that she, or anyone else, doesn't provide for you. Until you can answer YES to any of the dependency questions, you will have to give your moms income. I would contact the schools financial aid office and tell them what you did. Ask they if you should correct it on line with your Pin or if they want to correct it in their office. Either way, you will need to contact your mother and get her tax forms. Good luck.

It depends on your need. Sometimes they pay for all, sometimes they barely pay for any. You have to fill out the FAFSA form to find out how much they say you need, then it goes to the college.

Answer: It's not quite as simple as that. Financial aid ...
It's not quite as simple as that. Financial aid combines a lot of different things, and that includes special loans, grants (you don't have to pay those back), and work study, among other things. Your financial aid package may cover all of your expenses each semester, it may cover half, or it might not cover much at all. It depends on your financial situation, how well you do in school, and each school's financial aid policies. I have a large scholarship that lasts for four years, and I get some grant money from the school that I don't have to pay back. I also get loan money (which, after I graduate, I do have to pay back), and after all that, I have either a credit or still some money I owe each semester. If I have a credit, I can leave it there or take it out for books. If I still owe some, then I have to find 3rd party loans or pay out of pocket or borrow from mommy and daddy... It's complicated, but if you ask the financial aid department at the school you're planning on going to, they can help you a lot. Lastly, sometimes if you are valedictorian of your high school, certain college will automatically pay half your tuition, room and board right off the bat, or sometimes even let you have a completely free ride (in which you owe NOTHING), but that usually only happens for in-state colleges. Hope that helps!

Question: What to do if if financial aid is exhausted and can't get a loan?
My school will not allow me to take out loans because I no longer qualify for financial aid because it is exhausted. My credit is bad what should I do?

Answer: Is work-study an option for you? What do you mean by ...
Is work-study an option for you? What do you mean by "exhausted"? It's no fun to work while you're in school, but if you really can't get a loan for whatever reason, work-study is great, or you may just have to get a regular job. Either way, college is still worth it!

Question: Does financial Aid cover summer courses?
I filled out a fafsa and got aid for fall and summer semesters. I want to take a summer course to get it out of the way. Do I have to fill out another fafsa form or does the one I filled for the 2007-2008 school year cover that or do I just have to pay the costs myself?

Answer: fasfa can cover summer classes but I dont think all of it. ...

Answer: It depends on your college and how much you are eligible for ...
It depends on your college and how much you are eligible for with the extra costs of summer school factored in. The requirements for the number of courses are different and the method of applying for it are different. The information for summer school is already on university's financial aid is already posted. In a few weeks, there will be a very simply one sheet form (basic data, no tax info) for me to print out and submit to them. They will let me know what I am eligible for later. Contact your university if your answers aren't available from your website as every school is different.

Answer: Actually she's ^ wrong. I received a pell grant after ...
Actually she's ^ wrong. I received a pell grant after applying for school in the Spring. I did not attend the Fall. So they let me use the money that I would have received in the Fall, and applied it to Summer bill. It is possible, and you do not have to redo another FAFSA, because it covers the ENTIRE year. But you should def talk to your financial aid advisor and see if you have enough funds to cover the summer, because you might not have enough to, resulting in you paying the rest. Good luck.

Answer: Each school is different, I attend university of cincinnati, ...
Each school is different, I attend university of cincinnati, and you get three quarter worth of financial aid, I use mine in the fall, winter, and spring, so there is no money left for the summer. However if your student status changes, like from a freshman to a sophomore, you will get extra money for summer classes. But it really depends on your school. If you just now are starting to use it, and you only used it for fall, you have plenty left for summer. But check with your financial aid department of the school you want to attend. good luck

It can. It depends on how much financial aid you receive, from who, and how expensive your school is. Usually financial aid is applied for tuition first and if there is any left over, it can go towards housing, books and meal plans and others including the cost of a computer.!!

Question: question about tax return, financial aid?
I know a family that own a business and the income is over $100k per year. Yet, they claimed all false informations like they're making $1k per month... all the behind the table stuffs... also, their kids also does that to get benefits from financial aid for years already. I feel this is unfair and really do want to do a job as a citizen to report it... What do you guys think? Am I being too nosy? I feel like it's unfair for other people..... Thanks To Financial Aid Expert, I don't have any evidence but I am too tired of all their actions. I mean they owned a nail salon and not reporting their incomes, trying to get as much out of the government as they can... Their taxes return, they said they're working for 1k per month... give me a break, I know that they do make more than 2k per week... by the way, they put their cashes somewhere else... the reason I know so much of it is because I know them personally... avoiding paying taxes. Like the daughter work at this place, then they'll have a mutual agreement with that the daughter's boss to put it under the daughter's mother name....1/3 of it they'll put on the W2 form, the rest will be paid in cash... they cheat every possible way...

Answer: Fafsa applications (and tax returns) for people who are self ...
Fafsa applications (and tax returns) for people who are self employed are a bit more complicated than a simple annual income. Unless you are a licensed accountant and know exactly what the monthly business expenses are, I'd worry about yourself first.

Answer: I work in Financial Aid and occasionally we get calls just ...
I work in Financial Aid and occasionally we get calls just like yours... Someone will call and say, "So-and-so is using all their financial aid for drugs," or "So-and-so drives a Mercedes and still gets a financial aid check, so I think something must not be right," etc. There is nothing we can do about this. We cannot investigate someone and require them to submit documents to our office for investigation based on hearsay. There may be things about their situation that you are not even aware of. For example, when someone owns their own business, although their gross receipts may total a certain amount, after business expense deductions, amount could be much much less. I have seen a tax return for a parent's business that had gross receipts of over $1 million that they deducted all the way down to under $40,000! And this is legal--you can deduct all sort of expenses from your income if you are self-employed (advtertising, business use of your car or home, etc.) So, even you feel that they are scamming the system, there really is nothing that you can do about it. Only if conflicting information is provided to the Financial Aid Counselor can an investigation be done. Usually people who are providing false info on the FAFSA will sooner or later slip up on their story and the facade will come to an end.
