Question: If someone had a student loan and they have been declared disabled, is the loan forgiven?
I got a student loan in the late 1990's to attend nursing school. I was later injured so badly at a major hospital that I was declared by the federal government to be disabled. I am now on SSI, full disability. Is student loan forgiven? If so, how do I go about that?

Absolutely not. All you need to do is to show them the proof that you are disabled person and make no income. Good luck.

Answer: Contact your lender and tell them you are disabled. You ...
Contact your lender and tell them you are disabled. You will have to submit paperwork and sign releases and have your doctor sign off on it. They will do their own investigation and let you know their decision. For hubby, his loan was "conditionally" discharged for a few years first. Then his situation was re-assessed before it was completely discharged. Also, if you have let your loan go into default, that will still be on your credit report. Even if you get it discharged, it will still be on your credit report, because you were still delinquent in the payments of it and let it get into default.

A hand full of States will refund a partial amount of your tuition. First, you must graduate with a teaching degree. They won't cover student loans that are devoted to housing & living expenses. Look under 'higher education' at each State's web site.

If you were a full-time teacher for five consecutive academic years in a "low-income" school, you could qualify for a federal loan forgiveness program. To qualify, you must: -have taught full time for five consecutive complete academic years in an elementary or secondary school that was designated a "low-income" school by the U.S. Department of Education. And ... -At least one of the qualifying years of teaching was after the 1997?1998 academic year. -Your loan was made before the end of the fifth year of qualifying teaching. -The school must be public or private nonprofit. Truth depending on the type of student loans you have. For Stafford Loans if you have taught 5 years (what you must do to qualify is attached to the application): http://ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/attachments/GEN0502Attach2.pdf Perkins Loans can be up to 100% of the loan and does not require 5 years of teaching nor do you have to teach full time. You apply for the forgiveness at the school to which you took the Perkins Loan as they administer the loan.

You can also check with the state that you move to and see if they offer any loan forgiveness programs.

Question: Can Students Loans aquired before 1998 be forgiven by filing bankruptsy?
I am in student loan hell ten years AFTER graduating. Help!

I don't think so, it was understanding that you can't get rid of student loans with bankruptcy. They are government loans that won't ever go away until they are paid.

Answer: No you can't get student loans discharged in bankruptcy. ...
No you can't get student loans discharged in bankruptcy. You could probably still list them in your bankruptcy paperwork, but you'd still be required to pay them back. 10 years, 20 years, 50 years after you took them out.

Question: I didn't graduate from college. Am I somehow eligible to get my loans forgiven or at least reduced?
I mean, I know it's a debt that I have, however, I didn't graduate and that debt is still there. Is there options for me?

Answer: Yes get a job and pay them back. It doesnt matter if you ...
Yes get a job and pay them back. It doesnt matter if you graduate or not, pas with A, B, C, or D grade, you took out loans to pay for a service you received. Whether you paid attention or finished is your problem not the loan company.

Answer: Not in the US. Student loans have always been exempt from ...
Not in the US. Student loans have always been exempt from Bankruptcy. You can delay payment and pay what you can (and it has to be what you can, if put into forced bankruptcy a Judge will decide what you "can" pay). I had a friend who also didn't finish and was broke and he didn't pay for years, then got into a good position and eventually paid it off. You have to make an effort and deal in good faith. Understand if it is a direct GOVERNMENT loan and you cheat the government they can bring criminal charges against you which gets very serious and becomes a Felony on your records, so don't ignore them. Pay them something if you can.

Answer: The first two posters are right. It doesn't matter ...
The first two posters are right. It doesn't matter whether you've finished school or not. You still have to pay them back. You agreed to all of this when you signed your promissary note. If you're having issues, contact your lender and work out some sort of payment schedule.

Question: Does anyone have information on education majors being able to have their loans forgiven ?
I've heard of people agreeing to teach on (for example) an army base for say two years, and the government forgives their student loans. Does anyone have any info on this?

Answer: Yes, there are programs for student loan forgiveness, but ...
Yes, there are programs for student loan forgiveness, but they are for more than two years. There is a program for those who work for a government agency. In addition, you could be working at an inner city school in which there is a large population of title one students. Also, it could be a critical shortage area in teaching such as math, special education (educating disabled students), or science. I will include some readings on the student loan forgiveness program for teachers.

Question: Govt. Orgs / Jobs Which Pay For or Forgive Stafford Govt. Student Loans?
Hello. When I finish graduate school I'll owe just under $150,000 in Stafford Govt. Student loans. Both subsidized and non-subsidized. I majored in Economics for undergraduate and Development Economics for graduate school. I'll have BA and MA degrees, both from New York University (NYU). What are some of the best Government jobs to get / are there any government jobs I could get, which would help pay for or even forgive student loan debt? I know they are out there and I?m trying to track down all the options. Thanks!

Answer: There are tons of jobs available in the government. Go to ...
There are tons of jobs available in the government. Go to usajobs.gov to see them. Or, for entry level jobs, try studentjobs.gov Most federal agencies do have a loan repayment program where they will give you a certain amount of money each year to pay your loans. However, Congress just passed a new bill that says as long as you make on time payments on your loans and work in the public sector for 10 years, your remaining loan balance will be forgiven. (The bill is called the "college cost reduction and access act." Research it for more details.) I am not sure if you can take advantage of the 10 year program AND get money from the feds to pay your loans at the same time. Probably not. The amount of $$ they give you each year to pay your loans is pretty small (usually max $5000 per year) that it may make more sense to just do the 10 year program instead. Also, the bill makes it so that your monthly payments are much more manageable, closer to $400/$500 (if you work a low paying $40-50k job) instead of the normal $1500 per month. The bill goes into effect in 2009 but I believe you can take advantage of it now.

Answer: The Federal student loan repayment program permits agencies ...
The Federal student loan repayment program permits agencies to repay Federally insured student loans as a recruitment or retention incentive for candidates or current employees of the agency. The program implements 5 U.S.C. 5379, which authorizes agencies to set up their own student loan repayment programs to attract or retain highly qualified employees. Although the student loan is not forgiven, agencies may make payments to the loan holder of up to a maximum of $10,000 for an employee in a calendar year and a total of not more than $60,000 for any one employee. An employee receiving this benefit must sign a service agreement to remain in the service of the paying agency for a period of at least 3 years. An employee must reimburse the paying agency for all benefits received if he or she is separated voluntarily or separated involuntarily for cause or poor performance. In addition, an employee must maintain an acceptable level of performance in order to continue to receive repayment benefits

Answer: Most public service careers, like military, PeaceCorp, ...
Most public service careers, like military, PeaceCorp, government jobs are eligable for loans forgiveness. Congress just passed a new bill that will go into effect in 2009 that lists a large variety of jobs that qualify for loan forgiveness. "Title IV - LOAN FORGIVENESS The proposed legislation would allow the Secretary of Education to cancel the balance of any interest and principal due on any Federal Direct Loan - including Direct Stafford, PLUS, or Consolidation Loan - that is not in default for borrowers who: * Have made 120 monthly payments on a Direct Loan after October 1, 2007 as part of an income contingent repayment plan or a standard repayment plan based on a 10-year repayment schedule * Are employed in a "public service job" and has been employed in a public service job during the 120 payment period. A public service job is defined as a full-time job in emergency management, government, military service, public safety, law enforcement, public health, public education, social work, public interest law services, child care, public library sciences, or any other job at an organization that is described in section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. Question: Are student loans forgiven for teachers?
If there's anyone out there who is a teacher in the state of California, then this is for you. I've heard rumors here and there that if a person becomes a public school teacher right out of college (say, for instance, a high school math teacher), then your student loans are just forgiven and you don't have to pay them back anymore. Can anyone shed some light on this? Is it true? Can you describe basically how it works? Specific to California would be helpful.

Answer: Student Loan can be sought through many different avenues. ...
Student Loan can be sought through many different avenues. It all depends on your personal credit rating. The biggest challenge is finding one that offers the lowest interest rate. There are various routes to explore when seeking out a bad credit student loan and I would suggest that your first port of call would be the school for which you are about to attend. You will need to fill out a FAFSA form in order to initially apply for a federal loan. Perkins loans are combined school and government funds. A combination loan may be another alternative way of acquiring a bad credit student loan. This type of student loan enables you to consolidatestudent loans defer your payment until you have finished college. This in turn will allow you time to improve your credit rating and when you leave college you could then look into consolidating your bad credit student loan at a better interest rate. This will mean your monthly payments will be at a lower level and therefore more affordable.

Answer: The loan forgiveness program for teachers is a federal ...
The loan forgiveness program for teachers is a federal program I believe but its so teachers go to school districts which are in need of teachers. So while I doubt Orange County CA needs new teachers, inner city Mobile Alabama might. The loans are forgiven over a period of time so it isn't like you can get hired, your loans are forgiven, and then you quit.
