Question: How did I get the Pell Grant?
How did I get the Pell grant. I dont remember applying for one, I'm middle class and dependent on parents, how is this possible?? Is this a mistake???
Answer: I don't remember applying for mine either. You can ...
I don't remember applying for mine either. You can check with Bursars to make sure you didn't get someone else's grant by mistake. If in fact it is your grant, enjoy it. You rarely get anything especially an education for free.
Answer: You would have had to file your FAFSA. Everytime you file ...
You would have had to file your FAFSA. Everytime you file your FAFSA an EFC(expected family contribution) is generated for you. FAFSA puts all the information on your FAFSA about your family finances, # of family members, # in college, ect through a formula to derive your EFC. Any student who has an EFC under $4000 is automatically awarded a PELL grant from their school.
If your EFC was over $4000, then you need to contact your financial aid office ASAP, as you were awarded the grant in error, and it will be caught eventually, and you would be required to pay back any funds that your school awarded you in error.
You should also review your student aid report, to be sure that you didn't make any errors when you entered your information.
Question: ok so my tution is $9650, I have a pell grant of $4819. I have a sub loan of $3466 and an unsub loan $1353 .?
exaclty what do I have to pay back , "how much" ???
im going to college starting in august so... I just want to start saving up & getting a head start on things.
Answer: you will have to pay the loans back plus interest. with the ...
you will have to pay the loans back plus interest. with the unsub you are charged interest while in school and with the sub the govt pays the interest while you are in school. you have to begin your repayment 6 month safter you graduate or if you drop out of school at that point you will start repayment. the sub is better than the unsub thats why schools try to get you as much sub before they go to the unsub.

Question: Dropped 50% of classed covered by pell grant...?
and I am passing the other 50% of classes. Will FAFSA penalize me next semester by not paying for school? If so, how long will I be penalized?
You need check with your financial aid office. Each college/university is required by the federal gov't to have a Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy. Each school designs their own policy.
If you are not making Satisfactory Academic Progress as defined by your school, then you would NOT be eligible for any "FAFSA money."
So check with the financial aid office to see what their policy is, and you should consider going to summer school to make up some of those hours. You cannot receive financial aid forever, there is a cut off, and if you get too far behind you may run out of financial aid before you have a degree.
Good luck
Answer: A couple of things could happen... it depends on the school ...
A couple of things could happen... it depends on the school and when in the semester you dropped and if you have done this before.
1. some are required to pay the fin aid back as well as pay for the tuition that you now owe because you cant get fin aid because you dropped (not good - paying for classes twice you aren't even going to get credit for).
2. you will be under financial aid probation in which you have a specified amount of time to "make up" those dropped hours while you are still getting fin aid (this is usually 1 semester)
3. Your fin aid could be cut off completely and you would then be required to pay for school yourself in order to make up the deficiency (it could be take the number of required hours that you "owe them" or to increase your GPA to the minimum or whatever you are being penalized for.
Again, your school will be able to tell you exactly what is happening. Dropping classes is never a good idea, drop too many and you won't be able to get fin aid because you've been there too long and should have graduated already.
Answer: no you shouldnt get penalized. But if I was you I would ...
no you shouldnt get penalized. But if I was you I would still check with financial aid
Question: is there any time limit on getting pell & other grants while attending college?
can I keep going to school for 10 years or more & keep getting grants to pay for tuition & books? how about 20 years or 30 years at different community colleges or unversity? I like staying in school.
Answer: If you are receiving TAP, you only have a limit of 4 years. ...
If you are receiving TAP, you only have a limit of 4 years. I don't know about the others.
Answer: Each school sets their owe limits, but at most places ...
Each school sets their owe limits, but at most places it's 6 years for an undergrad degree. You can get student loans and fellowships to get a PhD and stay in school for around 10 years though if you'd like.
Answer: Federally, there is an 12 semester limit to pell grants, but ...
Federally, there is an 12 semester limit to pell grants, but usually that limit is monitored from college to college. Every financial aid adminstrator gets a flag on students whose social security number matches up with more than 12 semesters of undergraduate aid, when that student's FAFSA processes. In order for federal aid to dispurse, your financial aid office has to override the flag if you are over 12 semesters.
Most college's registrar's offices keep close tabs on their students and what degree they are working towards. This means students that skip from school to school are usually caught as well, because most colleges require transcripts from previous colleges to be obtained before they attend. If someone did not want to report all the colleges they have jumped from, their financial aid transcripts list the schools aid was obtained from as well.
By law, all students recieving financial aid, must be in a degree seeking program--meaning they must be working towards something. Because pell grants are only offered to undergraduate students, once you get an undergraduate degree, you are no longer pell eligible.
Grants other than pell grants usually differ from state to state and college to college, but to ensure the money gets spread around equally, most financial aid offices check grant requirements against the elibility deterimed from the FAFSA/
Question: Why did I not receive a Pell Grant on my financial need for 2008-2009?
I kmow financial aid is based on the "financial need" of the person applying, but is misleading in every aspect because it's distribution of aid is poorly planned out. Just because families of students who work to provide themselves to be financially "safe" ? even those who fit the maximum salary standards set by the program ? may not receive Pell Grants or, even if they do receive grants, will not receive the full possible amount.
Federal budget legislation passed in early 2006 cut the federal financial aid budget by $12.5 billion.
Why the hell didn't I received any for 2008-2009?
Answer: You did not receive any Pell Grant for the school year ...
You did not receive any Pell Grant for the school year because of the amount of income that you earned - you made too much money.
Answer: You need to fill out the FASFA as soon as possible to ...
You need to fill out the FASFA as soon as possible to receive any federal student aid. I would also talk to the financial aid office at your school.
I am not going to get into what is fair or not. As far as I am concerned, all "public" universities should be free for US citizens. Private schools can do anything they want, since they are private.
Answer: Pell Grant is meant for the poorest of families. Most ...
Pell Grant is meant for the poorest of families. Most schools offer other need based aid for middle income students/families. Call your school and ask them to consider you for grants/scholarships. If they say they did.......ask them to reconsider. Most schools have an appeal process
Answer: It is possible that you made an error when you filled out ...
It is possible that you made an error when you filled out your fafsa. You should check out the numbers you put in to make sure. It happens to people all the time. You can do this if you have your pin number, if you don't just talk to your financial aid office.

I guess I have been out of school too long...
What in the world is a pell grant?
I don't have a clue...
Guess what, if you really want to go to college, do what I did, pay for it yourself...
Why does everyone think they are entitled to a grant of some kind???
You know you will never pay it back...
This grant never guarantees you a job...
There is not even a reason to know you will learn anything...
Answer: If you didnt qualify for a Pell Grant you should try and ...
If you didnt qualify for a Pell Grant you should try and appeal the decision. I actually appealed for a special circumstances about 2 months ago. They reconsidered it and I qualified for the grant and had the money deposited into account in about 2 weeks. There is no harm in trying.
Answer: Pell Grants are disbursed based on need. The numbers ...
Pell Grants are disbursed based on need. The numbers provided from income tax information (yours and your parents, I'm assuming) are used to determine your expected family contribution (EFC). The higher the EFC, the less likely a person is to get a Pell Grant.
Monies for Pell Grants do not come from an unending source. The later you apply for FAFSA, the less chance you have of seeing that funding available. It is a first come first serve basis.
If your family truly has a financial need; a parent lost a job, etc....you can petition your financial aid director for a professional judgment.
FAFSA doesn't have any place to show if a person has been out of work for say, the last six months, which would dramatically alter a students financial aid standing.
Since you haven't shared much information that's about the best I can offer. I understand you're upset, but unfortunately, you're not the only one out there in this situation. People may 'look good on paper' but the reality of life is that people are struggling.
Good Luck to you.

If you need financial help, you don't belong in college...
If you didn't learn in high school that the world runs on the almighty dollar, when exactly will you learn?

Answer: When you fill out the FAFSA you are applying for the Federal ...
When you fill out the FAFSA you are applying for the Federal Pell Grant amongst other grants. It goes to the Federal Student Aid Processing Center which calculates an EFC result and submits that data back to the schools you listed on your FAFSA. The school/s then use that info to determine how much Pell Grant money you qualify for and whether you meet the qualifications for any other grants that may be provided at that campus.
Question: Question about Pell Grant amount?
Lets say:
I take 12 credit hours (minimun full-time) and get $1500 semester
Now, if I take 17 credit hours, would this amount increase or not?
Thanks
Answer: It should increase, but only to compensate for the increase ...
It should increase, but only to compensate for the increase in what you would pay for the extra class' book and fees.
But ultimately the pell grant is set by your financial need, and once it is past the full-time limit, it doesn't budge. If it falls below the full-time status, it eventually levels out.
Answer: No.
The pell will not increase if you take more than 12 ...
No.
The pell will not increase if you take more than 12 hours. It's maxed out at 12. It would DECREASE if you take less than 12 however.
Answer: No, it will not increase. You receive 100% of your award ...
No, it will not increase. You receive 100% of your award amount if you are full time, which is 12 or more units. Since you are already receiving 100% at 12 units, taking any more units will not increase the amount because you are already receiving the entire amount.
If you are less than full time (12 units) then you award will decrease. It will be prorated based on your actual unit load.
